International Papillomavirus Society (IPVS)
About Us
Organization Description
The International Papillomavirus Society (IPVS) is the global authority on the human papillomavirus (HPV). The vision of IPVS is a world free from HPV-related disease. IPVS promotes the worldwide exchange of ideas, knowledge, and research materials among basic, clinical and public health research professionals concerned with HPV. IPVS was officially founded in 2000, after annual meetings since 1982. (Society website: IPVSoc.org)
Around the world, public awareness of HPV and how it affects our health is far too low. As a result, nearly half a million people die each year from HPV-related cancer; which is tragic because most of those deaths can be prevented through HPV vaccination, (cervical) screening and timely treatment.
To raise public awareness of HPV, and inform people how to protect their health, IPVS launched the International HPV Awareness Campaign in 2018, The conversation goes on throughout the year, and is commemorated on the global health calendar on March 4th - International HPV Awareness Day. Under the theme One Less Worry, the campaign is implemented by over 155 partner organizations around the world. The public facing website of the campaign is AskAboutHPV.org, with evidence-based facts about HPV in 13 commonly spoken languages. By normalizing the conversation about HPV, we endeavor to reduce stigma and misinformation around the virus and increase vaccination and screening uptake.
